Unless you’re completely out of touch, you’ve probably seen multiple viral videos of people after surgeries or other procedures. As they groggily come out of sedation, people can sometimes say hilarious things! Before you get dental sedation, you may wonder if you’ll end up with your own video getting tons of likes online.
But what is being under dental sedation really like? Will you be out of it or completely in control? Although sedatives can affect people differently, here are some things you can expect when taking oral conscious sedation!
Easy as Taking a Pill
While some other sedation options require an IV or wearing a nasal mask throughout your time in the dentist’s chair, oral conscious sedation is as simple as filling and taking a prescribed pill. You get a pill from the pharmacy and take it about an hour before your visit as instructed—and that’s it! This sedation method requires minimal effort on your part, and it will begin working by the time your appointment starts, keeping you in a relaxed, content state throughout treatment.
Dream-Like State
As its name suggests, oral conscious sedation does not render you unconscious, which means you will probably stay awake throughout the procedure. In other words, you should be able to respond to your dentist’s questions and instructions and be somewhat aware of what’s around you. However, you will feel as though you are in a dream, meaning that you will not be stressed or bothered. You may feel warm and light, almost like you’re floating. In this dream-like mental state, you will feel perfectly at ease.
While this pill works, you will not be able to drive. In other words, you will need to have a family member or friend drive you to and from your dentist’s office to prevent an accident.
Blurry Memory
Because oral conscious sedation uses strong medication, after the effects of the pill wear off, you will probably find that your specific memories of the appointment are a bit fuzzy. Don’t worry—it’s a normal side effect and can be particularly beneficial if you have severe dental anxiety. As the saying goes: ignorance is bliss! Not remembering details from your visit can help you avoid unnecessary stress. As a result, you may say or experience a couple of things you don’t quite remember.
After being under oral conscious sedation, you may or may not have a viral video on your hands, but you can have a better dental visit with less stress and discomfort. This option can help you get the care you need and eliminate any fear or anxiety you may feel about your treatment.
