Getting your child ready for their semi-annual visit to the dentist can be a big deal. After all, you want them to know what to expect, but you also don’t want them to be afraid. Thankfully, there are lots of fun and exciting books out there that you can share with them prior to their appointment to help them get a better understanding of what’s going to happen. These tales feature some of their favorite characters showing how brave they are all the while teaching them exactly what to expect. Here are just a few beloved books to get you started.

General Exam & Cleanings

For children heading to a first appointment for a basic exam and cleaning, let a familiar face like Little Critter show them what to expect in “Just Going to the Dentist” by Mercer Mayer. This the story also includes the main character getting a filling, but parents can bypass that part if they don’t want to concern their kids.

“The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist” by Stan and Jan Berenstain follows our beloved bears as their family takes their semi-annual trek to care for their teeth.

“Daniel Goes to the Dentist” is a Daniel Tiger book that gives kids a step-by-step outline of what will happen at their appointment, helping to quell those frightening fears of the unknown right along with Daniel.

Other Procedures and Treatments

In “Dora Goes to the Dentist,” Dora the Explorer explores the dentist’s office and shares a bit of information about what kids can expect from some common dental procedures. It also explains some of the tools your child’s dentist and hygienist will use during their appointment and is sold together with the book “Dora Goes to the Doctor” to help kids feel calm about their checkups, too!

“ABC Dentist” by Harriet Ziefert is a fun dictionary story that explains everything your child might encounter at their dental appointment, from A to Z. It also has a useful dental FAQ section for your child’s burning questions that you may not know how to answer yourself.

Remember, it’s normal for your child to be a little nervous before heading to the dentist, but with the help of these books, you can show them that there’s nothing to be afraid of!
